You never imagined that it would happen to you, but here it is – the dreaded double chin! Decades ago, there were all kinds of crazy “treatment options” – each a supposedly effective double chin treatment. They included “chin-tightening” exercises and using a wrap that wrapped round the top of your head all the way around your chin and back. Did they work? It depends on who you ask.
In our experience, however, no amount of chin-tightening exercises will get rid of an actual double chin. On the other hand, the good news is that there are new options out there to reduce a double chin. And they’re reliable. So read on and find out if one is just the thing you’re looking for!
To understand how these reliable double chin treatments works, we first need to define what a double chin is.
A double chin is simply submental fat. Fat needs somewhere to go, and the area below your chin is the perfect resting place for extra fat.
Excess fat deposits can be the result of weight gain or the aging process. They can also be built into your genetics. However, trying to lose weight in your double chin is incredibly difficult without undergoing double chin reduction and jawline enhancement.
You and Your Double Chin Are Not Alone
In 2015, Allergan performed a study in which one-third of the male participants identified with having a double chin.
In a later study performed by Healio, almost half of the participants thought had a double chin – and half of them thought it made them look less attractive.
Other studies have shown that 67% of Americans have a double chin, so you’re not alone. And that’s why we’re going to cover two double chin reduction treatments that are both effective and non-invasive.
First, though, let’s take liposuction off the table
When you think “fat,” you probably think “liposuction.” Even though you’re familiar with the term, you may not know how liposuction works. It’s a surgical procedure that turns fat into liquid. The liquid is then sucked out of the body using a vacuum hose.
Although liposuction is the most reliable way to drastically reduce the amount of fat hanging out under your chin, it’s not necessarily the best option for everyone.
Liposuction is invasive and considered a surgical option, which means that it brings a lot of risks and side effects with it.
It requires weeks of recovery and causes significant pain.
Possible severe side effects include damage to your kidneys and heart and blood clots.
Sometimes liposuction also produces uneven results because any remaining fat in your chin moves around and resettles. This can cause dimpling, and you may have loose skin later.
Double Chin Reduction Option #1: Kybella Double Chin Treatment
Kybella® is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat beneath the chin by physically destroying fat cells.
The active ingredient in Kybella® is deoxycholic acid. This naturally occurring molecule aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.
When injected into the area beneath your chin, Kybella® destroys fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. Your body clears these dead cells from the treatment area and processes them though natural metabolism.
This may take a few visits, but once you’re happy with the results achieved, you don’t need any more treatments! Because the fat cells die, the results from Kybella double chin treatment are considered permanent.
However, you have to keep up your end of the deal because your body will make more fat cells if you gain a significant amount of weight. And guess where those fat cells may go… Under your chin! This doesn’t always happen, but you must understand that it could.
Option #2: Coolsculpting Treatment
This is another reliable double chin treatment. The name Coolsculpting is appropriate as it freezes fat cells to remove stubborn fat, leaving a sculpted look. Coolsculpting is safe and effective and is the only FDA-cleared fat reduction procedure that uses controlled cooling to safely target and eliminate diet- and exercise-resistant fat.
As we said, Coolsculpting freezes the fat cells – which essentially blocks blood and oxygen from reaching the cells and kills them off. Like Kybella treatment, when the fat cells die, the body processes the dead cells and gets rid of them. It takes time for the fat cells to freeze off and die, so the results aren’t immediate. It can take weeks or more for the dead cells to detach from the treatment area.
You may need to get more than one treatment because, sometimes, not all the targeted fat cells die. In addition, if certain cells were not fully exposed to the freezing because other fat cells were in the way, they might recover.
If that’s the case, then you’ll need to get another treatment. It’s typical for people to need a minimum of two Coolsculpting treatments to get the desired results. Once you’re happy with your new and improved chin area, the results should be long-lasting.
However, once again, there is a caveat with this double chin treatment. Just like with Kybella, you’ll need to manage your weight.
Whether that means losing weight or maintaining a certain weight depends on your individual situation. You were born with the same number of fat cells in your body that you have today. Most people don’t realize that!
The obvious conclusion from that fact is this: Fat cells expand and contract based on how much energy your body needs to store because you haven’t used it.
So if you take in excess calories, your body will still store it in fat cells and your double chin may come back. Or your body may choose to store the excess calories somewhere else on your body. Either way, it’s not a desirable outcome!
