Why are we writing a dermal filler FAQ? Well, our last article – “Dermal Fillers: What’s the Choice?” – covered all the dermal filler basics. But there’s so much more information to share and so many more questions people have – so many, in fact, that we weren’t able to cover them in just one article.

So, this week, we’re going to answer the 20 questions that potential patients ask us most often. Let’s get to it!

Dermal Filler FAQ: Best For…

Which Fillers are Best for Filling Out and Plumping Up Lips?

The two most popular dermal hyaluronic acid lip fillers are Juvéderm and Volbella. They’re both effective, safe, and produce natural-looking results, and can include lidocaine for pain relief.

Which Dermal Fillers are Best for Nasolabial Folds?

Nasolabial folds, or marionette lines, are the lines that show up around the mouth. Juvéderm Vollure XC has proven to be the most effective filler for nasolabial folds because it’s thin, smooths out wrinkles and fine lines around your nose and mouth, and produces natural results.

Which Filler is Best for Adding Volume to Hollow Cheeks?

It’s natural for your cheeks to deflate and sag as you age. Strategically-placed Voluma can correct age-related volume loss and provide your cheeks with contour and lift. Many injectors also use Radiesse. Since Radiesse is composed of calcium hydroxyapatite, it integrates well with the cheekbones.

Which Filler is Best to Contour Your Chin?

Voluma is perfect for the chin because it’s thicker and can fill out the area without looking unnatural. If you need to reduce a double chin, fillers are not the answer. Kybella treatment is the best way to reduce double chins as it dissolves the fat stores in the chin area.

Dermal Filler FAQ: Treatment Issues…

How Long Does it Take Dermal Filler to Settle?

With dermal fillers, the results are immediate. Everyone will notice, but no one will know exactly what you did!

Can Dermal Fillers Make Your Skin Sag?

Dermal fillers are subtle. They add a healthy amount of volume to your skin, but any skin stretching will be minimal. If you already have wrinkles or sagging skin, these fillers will fill up the area where there used to be natural fat.

Which Dermal Filler Lasts Longest?

Juvéderm Voluma XC is the longest-lasting dermal filler. It can last up to 2 years. The filler does not remain the entire time and then disappear. Instead, it metabolizes over time.

Dermal Filler FAQ: Before and After…

What Should I Do Before My Dermal Filler Session?

You don’t have to do much to prepare before your filler appointment. But discontinue the use of over-the-counter pain relievers and blood-thinning drugs at least a week before your appointment.

What Should I Avoid After My Dermal Filler Session?

Most of the post-procedure recommendations are straightforward.

  • Don’t expose the treated area to intense heat.
  • Avoid pressure on the treated areas for the first few nights.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Don’t apply AHA, Retinols/Vitamin C therapy, or oil-based make-up for 24 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
  • Avoid waxing, facials, Glycolic or AHA peels, laser treatments, and microdermabrasion for two weeks after treatment.

Can I Touch My Face After Fillers?

No. Don’t touch your face for at least 6-8 hours after your dermal filler injections. This will reduce your chances of getting an infection.

Can I Sleep On My Side After I Get Fillers?

Try to sleep on your back for 24-48 hours after filler injections. After that, you can safely sleep on your side without worrying that the filler will move with gravity.

Does Drinking Water Help Fillers?

Yes! Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin hydrated and enhances the effect of hyaluronic acid fillers.

Dermal Filler FAQ: Safety and Other Questions…

Are Dermal Fillers Safe?

Although all procedures come with side effects, dermal fillers are safe when performed by the right provider.

Are Dermal Fillers Safe for Long-Term Use?

Although long-term use has been shown to be relatively safe, there have been a few instances of people experiencing weakness of the muscles of the face, head, and neck after long-term use of dermal fillers. Talk with your provider if you’re concerned about this possibility.

How Do I Find the Right Provider to Give Me Dermal Filler Injections?

Friends are always a great resource, but sometimes they don’t want to share what they’ve had done. Evexias providers encourage you to share your experiences with friends so they too can get great results.

You want to find out if the provider has training for the injections they’re providing. The provider should also have extensive knowledge of facial anatomy and a great eye for aesthetics. At Evexias Medical Denver, our injectors have over 20 years of combined experience.

Due to the personal nature of fillers, often times patients decline to have before and after photos published on websites. However, your provider may have in-person photos they can share. Make sure to ask at your consultation.

How Much Do Dermal Fillers Cost?

The price depends on the filler used and how many syringes will be required to get the results you want. Filler treatments can run from $600-$2000. If you find someone who offers deeply discounted fillers, stay away! Counterfeit and diluted fillers do exist.

If you’re concerned about whether or not you’re getting a quality product, ask to look at the box to see if the safety seal is intact.

Can I Get Dermal Fillers While I’m Pregnant or Breastfeeding?

No. You’ll need to wait until you’re done breastfeeding before getting filler injections.

Can I Get Injections if I’m Battling a Sinus Infection or Have a Cold?

No. Wait until the infection has cleared. You don’t want the infection to spread to the injection sites.

When Can I Go Back to the Dentist?

We recommend waiting a full week before you get dental treatments. The pressure and facial stretching applied during dental treatments can misplace the filler.

What Happens if I Hate the Results?

Sometimes you aren’t happy with the way the filler looks. Don’t worry. Your provider can make adjustments to enhance the results. They may inject additional filler to create balance or dissolve it if appropriate.
