Your life’s been stressful lately and your skin’s suffering. It’s lost its glow and elasticity. But all is not lost! SkinPen microneedling is just the thing to consider to upgrade your skincare routine. So today, we’re going to show you how microneedling can change your life!
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive medical procedure that involves puncturing your skin with tiny needles to trigger a “healing process.” But don’t worry – because of their tiny size, the needles can’t go deep enough to create any significant damage to your skin!
Instead, they cause micro-injuries that trigger the immune system to disinfect, clean away debris, increase blood flow, and create new tissue. This heals the micro-injuries. And that’s why it’s a healing process: It triggers the production of collagen and elastin, and the growth of new skin.
The new elasticity and texture of your skin gives you back your youthful appearance! What’s not to love?
What Can Microneedling Treat?
Microneedling’s great for treating a variety of skin conditions such as :
- Acne scars
- Chickenpox scars
- Burn scars
- C-section scars
- Enlarged pores
- Uneven complexion
- Rough skin texture
- Stretch marks
- Fine lines
- Saggy skin
- Inflammation or swelling
- Sun damage and spots
- Age spots
- Dark circles
- Cellulite
- Hair loss and alopecia
- Excessive sweating
This procedure was made famous through derma rollers, but this is not the only way. One of the most efficient tools now for microneedling is the SkinPen.
Is SkinPen a Roller?
No. The SkinPen is not a roller— it’s a vertical micro-needling pen-like device that creates hundreds of microscopic channels into the top layer of the skin in order to stimulate collagen and elastin. The needles of the SkinPen cycle at 100+ stamps per second, potentially creating 1600+ microchannels per second when the SkinPen moves.
It’s absolutely safe to use, not only on your face, neck, and décolletage, but also on many other body areas such as your legs or buttocks.
How Many Microneedling Treatments Do I Need?
One treatment session can take around two hours. But it often depends on how many areas you want treated, the skin surface, and the type of skin condition. You’ll be able to discuss and set goals together with your medical professional. This will determine the number of procedures needed.
When Will I See Results?
Once the SkinPen microneedling has triggered the healing process, your skin needs a few weeks to recover. Some patients experience improved skin texture after only a few days.
But when it comes to treatment of significant skin damage (such as sun spots or deep scars), it can take your skin longer. It continues to heal for a few weeks after treatment.
How Long Do SkinPen Results Last?
In general, SkinPen microneedling results last 3-5 months, depending on the severity of your skin condition and how long the newly created collagen lasts. Everyone is unique.
So, if your skin needs to build a lot of collagen to repair severe damage, the SkinPen results might last for a shorter time compared to the recovery from milder damage. It’s also important to note that your lifestyle, diet, age and skincare routine also have an effect on the production, quality, and longevity of your new collagen.
Is There Any Downtime After the Treatment?
Recovery time differs from patient to patient. In most cases, patients have some swelling and redness for a few days after a SkinPen microneedling session, while some of them see their skin back to normal within one day. During the healing process, the skin may stay red, swollen, or scabby. But such side effects will disappear once the healing process is over.
How Should I Take Care of My Skin?
In order to support your skin’s recovery, we advise you to avoid the following for 24 hours after the SkinPen treatment session:
- Applying makeup
- Using strong skincare products such as retinol and vitamin C
- Sun exposure
- Sweating intensely (swimming, hot baths, sauna, intense workouts)
However, aftercare needs to continue beyond the 24 hours. Check out these tips on what to do until your skin’s fully healed:
- Avoid touching the treated area(s) and switch to gentle cleansers.
- If the skin is irritated, you may apply a cold compress.
- Whenever you need to touch your face, make sure you have thoroughly washed your hands.
- Continue to avoid sweating heavily (as above).
- If you apply makeup, make sure the tools you use are freshly cleaned to avoid infection.
- Apply sunscreen with high protection factor every day and don’t forget to reapply every 2 hours.
- Be careful with all your skincare routine – it’s best to discuss with your practitioner how you can resume using your usual skincare products.
How Should I Prepare For My SkinPen Microneedling Session?
Take it slowly and let your skin breathe. For a few days before the session, avoid harsh skincare products (such as retinol and exfoliators) and direct sunlight as much as possible. For effective treatment, come to the appointment without no makeup or other skincare on.
In addition, your skin should be in a healthy state. This means no active acne, eczema or psoriasis breakouts, or sunburn. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, we highly advise against microneedling of any kind with any application process.
What Are the Risks With SkinPen Microneedling?
Highly trained professionals carry out SkinPen microneedling in a safe environment. This makes the procedure very low risk. As mentioned earlier, the most common side effects are slight swelling, peeling, and/or redness of the skin after the treatment.
However, get in touch with your doctor immediately if you experience the following side effects:
- Bruises
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Nausea
- Yellow or green discharge
- Headaches
- High fever
